HERB KAWAINUl KANE (pronounced
KAH-ney) is an artist-historian and author with special interest in Hawai'i and
the South Pacific. He resides in rural South Kona on the island of Hawaii.
Career experience has included advertising art, publishing art,
architectural design, painting, writing, and sculpture. Clients include private
collectors, the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the National
Park Service, National Geographic, and major publishers of books and
periodicals. His art has appeared on postage stamps for the U.S. Postal
Service, the Republic of the Marshall islands, the Federated States of
Micronesia, and French Polynesia. As a design consultant, he has worked on
resorts in Hawaii and the South Pacific and a cultural center in Fiji.
Research on Polynesian canoes and voyaging led to his participation as
general designer and builder of the sailing canoe Hokule'a, on which he served
as its first captain. Hokule'a has now made four round trip Hawaii-Tahiti
voyages, and a 16,000 mile pan-Polynesia voyage to New Zealand and back, all
navigated without instruments. In 1984 he was elected a Living
Treasure of Hawaii. In the 1987 "Year of the Hawaiian" celebration, he was one
of 16 persons chosen as Po'okela (Champion). In 2002 Herb won the
Hawaii Book Publishers Association Award for Excellence in Book Publishing.
There are in the U.S. only a handful of artist-historians... painters who
cultivate the discipline of the historian but whose end products are pictures
rather than words. Herb Kane is one of them. Following are quotes from his
book, Voyagers.
"If an artist cannot get excited about
his work, no one else will. A painting or sculpture is a statement, a tangible
expression of an idea. The artist's enthusiasm in the performance may affect
forever the attitudes of viewers." "...the great historical writer,
knowing that the historian's task clearly includes both a high quality of
research and the art of communication, have regarded telling the story of
history as an art. Although this is conventionally done with words, I believe
that painting has the power to create a sense of history beyond words."
