Throughout Polynesia the traditional sailing canoes have been replaced by boats with outboard engines; but the single-hulled outrigger camakau (pronounced "thamakau") still exists in the Lau Islands of Fiji. During the fuel shortage of 1973 these vessels served for subsistence fishing and transportation.
