Captain George Vancouver brought the
Discovery home to England in 1795. It had been on a wearing, dangerous
voyage of more than four years around the world. Not to be confused with Cook's
Discovery this ship was built on the Thames in 1789 and fitted out for a
long voyage of exploration. Discovery was 99 feet in hull length with
burden of 337 tons. Bronze or copper fastened, her bottom copper-sheathed, the
ship mounted ten four-pounders and ten swivel guns. After the voyage she was
refitted as a bomb vessel, and served in the wars with France. She was made
into a prison hulk in 1808, and broken up in 1834.
