"Kahumannu, Queen of the Sandwich Islands"
This is an engraving of Queen Ka'ahumanu, Kamehameha The Great's favorite wife. While serving as Kamehameha II's kuhina-nui (premier), she was instrumental in the overthrow of the old Kapu system of law. Later, she served as Kamehameha III's regent. The spelling of her name, as it appears on the print, is an interpretation of the era. Hawaiian words and names were sometimes spelled differently, according to the nationality of the European publisher or the printer responsible for the work. This original antique print, in excellent condition, is part of the "Hikaroa Collection." If you're interested in purchasing it or seeing the entire Hikaroa Collection, make an appointment to view it the next time you are in the islands. Available at $375.
