Fisherman
He wears a ti leaf rain cape and holds a yellow fin tuna (?ahi). A favorite pearl shell lure with a bone hook is carried around his neck. In the background, the presence of birds betrays a surface-feeding school of skipjack tuna (aku). Fishermen sail through the school, chumming the water and hauling in akuthat have struck their lures. A lower left, a man hunts the shallows with a spear of hardwood, lighting his way with a candlenut (kukui) torch. The oily dried nutmeats were strung on bamboo skewers to make candles, and a handful of these, stuffed into a section of bamboo and ignited, gave a bright light. At lower right, men net a catch of silver perch (aholehole), a great delicacy.
